"The Boys From Brazil"  (1978)

Down the Hare Hole...

Oh, this one surely is a hare hole and-a-half to go down.  Nazi madmen loose in Brazil, genetic experimentation, Hitler, and a jolly good time of it all.  The movie poses a horrifying scenario, and yet there is rumor and some pretty compelling evidence that... well, it's in the movie.  Maybe this isn't fiction so much as a sly public admission of sorts.   This highly entertaining mid-century classic stars the great Olivier and Atticus Finch himself, Gregory Peck, having themselves a high old good time and doing some mighty fine acting in the process.

"The Virgin Queen"  (1955)

America in the distance...

Bette Davis at her fiery best as Queen Elizabeth I (who was, in actuality, very much more instrumental in the creation of America than conventional texts will allow). Here, Sir Walter Raleigh overcomes court intrigue to win favor with the Queen in order to get financing for his proposed voyage to the New World.

"Mindwalk"  (1990)

The Awakening...

Against a stunning backdrop of Mont St. Michel, a Politician, a Poet, and a Physicist cross paths and end up in a riveting metaphysical dialogue that may reveal the keys and meaning to life.  Three people having a conversation doesn't sound like good cinema; everybody thinks that when they hear about "Mindwalk".  And then they are blown away.   It creates a new groove if this is all neophyte territory for you.  Good stuff.

"The Legend of Lizzie Borden"  (1975)

The Enduring Mystery...

While the condition of this film is typical of a mid-70s made-for-television movie that has degraded somewhat over time, it was exceptionally well done, with a great script and a terrific cast, and it proved Elizabeth Montgomery had talents far beyond Samantha Stephens.  It's everything you want the tale of Lizzie Borden to be, and Elizabeth Montgomery is perfectly chilling.

"Gore Vidal's Lincoln"  (1988)

The Myth..

1988 miniseries.  After arriving in Washington in 1861 after his election, Abraham Lincoln struggles with personal and political problems during his Presidency. Beneath his folksy charm and unassuming manner, he shows himself to be a shrewd politician who is able to overcome his wife's neurotic behavior and the death of his son.

"Brian's Song"  (1971)

The Friendship...

This 1971 made-for-television movie is based on the real-life relationship between teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers and the bond established when Piccolo discovers that he is dying.  The movie is dated, necessarily, but it was a television phenomenon when it originally aired and remains a beautiful and moving story of enduring friendship.

"Excalibur"  (1981)

The Quest...

The absolute quintessential modern-day telling of this mythical story of a king, a magician, a sword, a lady, a kingdom, and a quest.

"The Night Stalker"  (1972)

The Enemy...

The original made-for-television creature feature is still the creepiest granddaddy of them all, and it launched a generation of early-70s monster-hunters along with a cottage industry and a much-beloved (albeit one-season-long) glory-ride on Friday night primetime television.
